Like Apple’s iTunes or Microsoft’s Zune Desktop, the Ovi Suite provides smartphone users with a way to download music, synchronize media between a computer and phone, backup a phone’s data, and update software on a phone.

The raw installation packages or XAP files could be downloaded freely shortly after the phone platform hit the market. The Zune client downloads XML files with the package locations for the purpose of enabling application installation and browsing, XAPs and XML are both served without restriction. The XAPs allow the compiled code to be examined by anyone and even though this poses a reverse engineering risk, it didn’t enable piracy right away. On the XDA-developers forum a guide was released a few days ago of how to modify these XAPs and allow it to deploy and run. The post came and went and the forum admins even deleted it, but even so, this made it clear that developers were searching for ways to work around the DRM and pirate the apps.

Zune for Mac

This Zune integration poses a problem for Mac users as Microsoft does not have a Mac version of its Zune syncing software. In lieu of re-packaging the Zune software for OS X, Microsoft released specialized connector software that will take care of your basic syncing needs. The Mac connector was made available shortly after the Windows launch and enabled syncing for those handful of users that have a Windows Phone handset with a Mac.

First, you should know that I’m a gadget/tech hound. I’ve had everything there is out there, from Amiga to Zenith. Remember the WebTV? I had one some 15 years ago. I bring that up because, frankly, I don’t see much difference between that failed attempt at bringing the “web” (as it was called then) to TV and Google’s latest try. I had no trouble placing a test call from a Kinect-equipped Xbox to a Dell netbook, but things didn’t work well in the other direction. Sometimes Windows Live Messenger failed to detect the computer’s built-in webcam and therefore wouldn’t allow me to place an outgoing video call. On another occasion, only seconds after ending a video call from Xbox to the laptop, Xbox informed me that “None of your contacts are available to join a Video Call.” Another time, the Xbox responded to my attempt to answer a video call by flipping me over to a text chat.

Getting started with Kinect if you have an Xbox 360 at hand is incredibly easy – just plug it in and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the short audio and camera calibration exercise. What follows is guaranteed to drop jaws across even the most hardened of tech enthusiasts, well at least till the novelty wears off. The array of cameras in the Kinect sensor essentially identifies you – the player, head, arms, legs and all – against the room background and starts responding to your movements a la Tom Cruise in Minority Report. Within minutes, you’re navigating game and Xbox menus on your TV by waving your hands in thin air, and the onscreen pointer responds appropriately without any discernable amount of lag. As with any new system, it takes a little bit of time getting used to the navigation controls, but I’ve got to say, not having to getting used to a new controller – we are, after all, intimately familiar with our appendages – is liberating.

Kinect is a motion sensor bar with two depth sensors and an RGB camera. It is capable of reading gamers body movement, and allows them to control Kinect games using physical gestures. Microsoft launched Kinect last November with the aim of breaking into the growing market of motion gaming that was dominated by the Wii. Microsoft will be hoping to gain the edge over their rivals Wii and PS3 motion, by the fact that Kinect does not need a remote control. Kinect is also equipped with a built in microphone for voice command or voice and video chatting.

While the domains “iphoneonsprint.com,” “iphoneontmobile.com,” and “iphoneonatt.com” are all owned by a person named Jim Benton, a company by the name of Verizon Trademark Services LLC just snatched the domains “iphoneonverizon.com” and “iphoneforverizon.com.” The same company just so happens to own “verizon.com,” too.
